School Agenda 21 "graphite" in the middle Recycling

Last weekend took place in the city of Alicante an interesting contest while interesting where they joined two cultural phenomena as important as graffiti art and environmental education. It is the first edition of "Sprayate" , a contest promoted by the Department of Urban and Inusa Care (a company specializing in cleaning and treatment of waste from the city) where young people put their talents in art graffiti to be succulent prize of 1,000 euros.

Contest "Spayate" has given color to paint the streets of Alicante's many glass containers around the city, a competition in which 18 graffiti all over Spain participated in this exercise to promote the artistic talent of young people, releasing the expressions of these artists in order to combat vandalism and graffiti and aesthetically enhance the city of Alicante.

But these are not the only targets of the initiative, also because it wanted to also have environmental consciousness and drawings have been saved relation to sustainability, recycling and environmental awareness : through an act to combat indiscriminate graffiti have taken advantage of the exercise to educate about the environment.

Since opening period came to be present up to 25 sketches, of which 18, they were selected and presented at the Paseo de Federico Soto and shaped his drawings "green" in their respective containers. The material, available apart from that the graffiti was provided by the council and lasted 5 hours.

Of course, there was a juicy prize game that was distributed as follows:

- First prize: "Ecojuegos?" of Alicante Soul winning $ 1,000

- Second prize: "Night and Day or Carrot Low Power" Madrid's Artza , winner of 500 euros.

- Third prize: "Life Cycle" of Orihuela Cuellimangui winning another 500 euros.

How To Remove Air From Underfloor Heating System

environment of drugs by the World Health Day

cursos.com

Only 10 days left to celebrate World Health Day -7 April, and from Educambiente propose a reflection about the damage they cause environmental pollution human health.
This year, the WHO (World Health Organisation) has decided to focus this event to the antimicrobial resistance: " If you do not act today, tomorrow there will be no cure "reads the slogan chosen to enhance the event. Specifically, this claim is intended to alert the public and governments that misuse of drugs, either because no treatment was just as has prewritten or because the patients choose to self-medicate without knowing if they are choosing the right medicine - may result in loss of the effect of the drug, and thus the organisms are immune to the chemistry.
A collation of this attempt to inculcate the importance of not self-medicate, it is very appropriate to conduct an inventory of medicines and other medical supplies that we have in our homes. That is why an activity appropriate for practice with students at this time close to World Health Day would be to learn to recycle medical that we have available and which are not always useful.

Recycling home pharmacy, an activity for children and adults:
seems that recycling paper, cardboard, plastic breaks, glass ... is a use that is enough depth in society today, as statistics show that more and more citizens are joined this cause. However, when the drug issue goes, it seems that environmental awareness tends to disappear in an instant. What to do with anything that is expired or no longer want them in our medicine cabinet? All at the pharmacy! One might think, however, not everything is recycled in these outlets.
familiasenruta
Because there are doubts today offer a class dedicated to the recycling of drugs, thermometers X-rays, bandages and syringes that are no longer useful. Most children will learn to respect and be put into practice what they have studied at home.

* What to do with drugs : In recent years, Spain has the Sigro Program (Integrated System of Management and Recycling of Containers) which lists the drugs and their containers through containers that are located in pharmacies. The proper way to do that is deposited in the containers the whole of medicine, that is, the cardboard packaging, the contents of this (Bottle of syrup, blister pads, etc..) And Package Leaflet. The separation of different materials and is a task of Sigrid
- Why can not be disposed down the drain? Why are chemicals and sewage are discharged directly to water areas where they live beings. In fact, they are doing some early research for fear that the human being, when discarded through the urine remains of drugs taken, may be attempting, again, the life aquatic.
- Why the containers can not be deposited in the cardboard recycling container or glass? Because in both cases may contain traces of the drug, which would not directly apply to the recycling process.

Tuverde
* What to do in the case of a mercury thermometer useless: In If our home kit on a thermometer of these features-and out-of-sale, it is of utmost importance not to throw it away. These objects contain mercury highly detrimental to the environment and human health. It also contains glass and a small percentage of plastic, all reusable. In this case, should lead to a green dot in your city will be responsible for recycling.

* gauze, bandages and syringes: medical cure these materials are included within the group of medical waste . It is considered which is the more damaging because it takes away impregnated microorganisms causing viruses and diseases. WHO recommends putting these products in special containers in closed bags in which you specify on the outside that it is' junk health. " Unfortunately, these containers are only found in hospitals, clinics and some pharmacies, so we suggest you ask your local pharmacy so I can advise the nearest container or you can contact the Ministry of Health (901,400,100) and request information.

Negocius
* And in the case of X-rays?: These materials also pollute, and much, because they contain silver salts through a recycling process, can be melted into ingots. If you work with this measure, we will be helping out the environment and the organization Pharmacists Without Borders in Spain , who intended the profits earned by the recycling to fund treatment programs for childhood diseases and other water disinfection health processes. Your health center or your pharmacist can help you find the appropriate place to deposit such films unusable.

Because the World Health Day we can all do our bit. From our homes, starting with the easiest and close, build a big help, we will take a step forward.

Activities for children in the International Year of Forests

,
Source: elaboratumonografiapasoapaso.com
resources are exhausted, all not forever, we must learn to care for our surroundings. The 2011 has been declared International Year of Forests by the UN order to raise awareness about the importance of forests for life. Today's children are adults and the future of tomorrow, so from Educambiente we propose you some activities related to the International Year of Forests.

The trees ensure human survival . The animal and plant species that contain contribute in feeding the human being, and lots of medicinal plants are used to manufacture drugs.
Forests act as carbon sinks as buffer the effects of climate change , plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Another of its many functions is evapotranspiration, which ensures the water cycle and hence the life of , as this facilitates the growth and development of plants and living things. The disappearance of the trees lead to increased CO2 in the atmosphere, therefore higher temperatures, which give rise to the poles to melt and water levels increase, because there are areas of land destined to disappear, on the other hand, ever more pronounced droughts that will result in the extinction of species and ecosystems, such as finding our own species is in danger.

One of the greatest threats to the Earth is deforestation caused by population explosion, overexploitation of natural resources, agricultural land use and livestock, and fire. The reforestation (planting trees) and reforestation (replanting of deforested areas) are some solutions to address this situation.

main thing is awareness , build on this year for fun and educational activities with children , so they can understand the magnitude of this problem. On March 21 we celebrate Arbor Day , plant a tree is planted life, if you have not done, there's still time, since Educambiente we encourage you to do it is never too late .

Source: us.123rf.com
The contact with nature is essential for children because they will discover what you told in class by themselves, have the ability to experiment and find new things, and be amazed at what you find. For this reason, we propose a outdoor excursion is an interesting alternative. Although any other contact with the environment will also benefit, such as: crafts, stories .

Before hiking informed about the different types of trees and plants that you will find, after chips produced some images of these trees and their main features . Devote a class to explain this knowledge when you go to the field you may recognize that children have explained them, and you can organize a small dividing into different groups which will discuss what trees are in front of the tracks that you will typed, the more species guesses wins the game. Ask

also identify the different animals that you meet and make a reflection on what they would mean for the disappearance of the trees, then tell them that relate to your own lives.

Source: www.publicdomainpictures.net
Another activity that we propose is to make a mark of logs, (mark means: Playback images in relief ) they will need a piece of paper recycling and a wax. Folio will have to support the tree and paint with wax in the folio, is like taking a mark, when the tour ends, remember this tree due to the mark.

This field visit to sure that children can find some fruit , and that is permitted to pick up some to make a dessert or eaten directly, depending on the result the next day in class.

end would be interesting to have the children write a brief editorial about what you liked most, surprised, and also a reflection on the role tree our own lives, when they are ready, tell them to read at loud and putting together everything learned.

If you click on this link, you can find some online activities that we recommend in a previous article.

Spain is planted in the World Forestry Day March 22

On 21 March, with the arrival of spring (or autumn for those of us who read from the southern hemisphere) is celebrating World Forestry Day, better known as the Day World Tree. Although it has gone unnoticed by the World Water Day in Educambiente not forget other celebrations like this, we feel special.

The main conclusion is, a considerable number of trees, so this day is of great importance in field of forestry, in addition to being an event in which both parents and educators can collaborate with younger children, and teach the values \u200b\u200bof nature.
Educambiente And although I remember a couple of days late, not too late, as this commemoration of our trees, still takes in most of Spain. Want to know where?

auladenaturales
First, this event is held since 1974, when it was adopted by the FAO * very favorable in the contextual framework in which we stand, ie the International Year Forests. It is no activities during this week, but people have access to other events in conjunction with our friends the trees, throughout the year.
We already talked about forestry *, or how children help repopulate the planet , and here are some examples of what is being organized this week in various parts of the peninsula. ;
For example, the Xunta de Galicia has started this week with a number of talks and lectures at colleges, aimed specifically at children, to raise awareness on the importance of protecting forests.
In La Rioja also continue to organize events, and the city of Arnedo has organized for Saturday March 26, a poplar plantation under the theme "Plant a tree with your own hands."
In Revenga (Segovia), could not miss not a celebration, and make it big: over all day, people who come to the House of Wood, will enjoy demonstrations and workshops of, for example, pruning or pottering, plus find dancing and pipers. Those who are near can not miss the appointment!
Group Tree
On the other hand, in Valladolid, the supermarket chain Tree, has joined the cause, and held during This week, an environmental workshop organized the Heritage Foundation Natural de Castilla y León. Notably, one of the courses are aimed at parents and children, and have as its theme domestic ecology, and Ecoinvent for children.
As we see, in Spain are being planted hundreds of trees, which demonstrates a clear awareness of ecosystem care. So do not forget to participate in any of the events (surely in your city is organized one, ask the City Council), and remember some wise words:
If I knew that tomorrow the world ends,
I, today, still, plant a tree.

Morning class celebrates World Water Day

If there is something we instil in the younger both at home and from schools is the importance of water . As an indispensable component of the human body is, we can not do without drinking more than six days without risking our lives. We know it's important, and no longer just for people, "however, does not skimp on wasting it on more than one occasion. It is important that Smaller learn to care for her, because although there is water for all, this also will end if we do not use it well.

Earth has about 1.4 million cubic kilometers of water. The problem is that over 95% of it is salt water. 2.6% remaining three quarters are in glaciers and ice caps. So the fresh water available is reduced to the figure of 0.001% of the total. It may not seem like much, but enough to meet basic human needs. According to estimates, there would be enough to supply fresh water to 20,000 million.

Unfortunately, in 2027 approximately third of the world's population will suffer water shortages ( estimated by the United Nations Programme on Environment , UNEP). And that as a result of waste generated in large populations and the contamination some water resources and increased demand due to industrial expansion. Therefore, it is important that children know how to appreciate this precious right. And a good way is to devote a whole day to explain, the World Water Day . Here are some ideas to celebrate this day.
Since the 1993 General Assembly of the United Nations took the decision, the World Water Day has been celebrated every March 22 . A day dedicated to awareness of citizens through various activities water scarcity. This year's World Water Day focuses on the impact they are having so much industrialization and large cities, such as climate change and natural disasters on water supply systems. So that the theme of this year "Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge" , it is intended appeal to organizations, governments, communities and individuals to make better water management in cities.

Take a day like this to teach children the proper use that we must give to the water. Organize a program of activities through which they can understand the importance of this resource and learn to make efficient and rational use of water as well as instilling respect for the environment. Here are some ideas to celebrate World Water Day : Visit
  • treatment facilities, water treatment, irrigation facilities, etc.
  • hold contests of poetry, drawing, composition, etc. on the theme chosen to celebrate this day: "Water for cities: responding to the urban challenge."
  • hold contests with questions about the water to see who knows more about it.
  • Develop posters on savings or water treatment on fresh water resources, etc.
  • Develop a small class photo exhibition showing for example the waste water is made in large cities.
  • Show practical examples on how to save water.
  • playback of any video
on the topics mentioned. Following is an example:

Earth's wound is getting deeper. Pollution and climate change largely increase the damage on the space generated natural, which shows changing and revolutionized in recent years. Nature rebels against this critical situation environmental phenomena generating a considerable force and devastation. Hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes are some of the countless signs of discomfort of the Earth and which in turn are taking forward the lives of thousands of human beings. In his quest to find a solution to this chaotic state of existence, very different countries use renewable energy forms in their ability to produce electricity at all times respect the natural environment without causing serious damage. Many of them we have been echoed in Educambiente.

However, far-reaching events occurred last week in Japan have to pay attention to one of renewable energy sources more controversial: nuclear energy. The explosion took place at a Japanese nuclear power last weekend a few hours after a huge wave dragged behind an entire population, has led to many different organizations and citizens around the world to put the voice alarm about the consequences of such energy for the planet.

The human health may be seriously affected by the misuse of this energy. As experts say, the longer the exposure time and radiation level greater risks. thyroid cancers, bone or leukemia are the most common long-term in these cases. In addition, most vulnerable areas of the body to this type of radiation are cells that protect the intestine and stomach . You can also generate changes or mutations in DNA derived then the formation of cancer. These alterations may be inherited , leading to distortions in future generations heads or brains as small, poorly trained eyes, slow growth or learning difficulties.

Experts say the most common symptoms after several hours of exposure to radiation are

- Nausea and vomiting , which can continue diarrhea, headaches and fever .

"Over time, the damage disappear momentarily, returning to affect our body a few weeks but already internal damage to organs.

-also affects the reproduction , especially women.

- However, children and fetuses are most vulnerable , as found in the growth phase and its cells are constantly moving.

The two measures proposed by the experts to avoid radioactivity are evacuation and iodine uptake . In the first case, it is necessary to avert the explosion site to as many people as possible to prevent the formation of such diseases. For its part, the iodine uptake is very important as it increases production of white blood cells to cope with the damage that can be generated in the spinal cord. Measures that must be maintained for at least five days.
In Japan, authorities have advised their citizens to prevent radioactive contamination that sheds his clothes and shoes and wash your skin with soap and water.

Unlike conventional pumps that can generate a single destructive effect caused by the so-called shock wave (wave of fire that can sweep away everything that is around), are nuclear many other effects. Of these, one can highlight five main

- initial nuclear radiation: the high temperature and high pressure created within the explosion emit radiation in all directions, coming to end the life of any living without the latter is aware that has been irradiated.

- Electromagnetic Pulse: the great activity of gamma rays, one of many that make this explosion, generates such energy on antennas, pipes, which can kill surrounding any electrical installation.

- Pulse Thermal air absorbs all the energy released by the fireball and spreads in the form of a blinding light and intense heat, causing serious burns to anyone.

- Shockwave : more devastating than traditional pumps, causing damage and destruction Unlimited buildings or living things.

- Radioactive Rain : high temperatures melted all radioactive material in the blast and are expelled in the form of ash that is precipitated during the first 24 hours after the explosion.

In extreme cases, the radioactivity would penetrate every living beings, as well as sea, land and air, reaching in high doses cause death or at lower doses or sterility mutations . Also radioactive materials in deep-water explosions could hide touch the troposphere and sunlight for months or years, bringing down temperatures and altering plant photosynthesis and food for marine animals (plankton). Finally, might also mitigate the ozone layer caused by nitrogen oxide fireball ejected into the atmosphere, which in turn lead to a solar radiation of serious consequences for the earth.

Despite all this, today there 442 nuclear reactors operating in 29 countries , as reported last March 11, 2011 by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) United Nations together. United States is in a first place remain the most dependent on nuclear energy and has more reactors in relation to France, which has 58. Spain, meanwhile, has 8 compared to 54 in Japan., Which supply 24.9% of the electricity used by the Nipponese in 2008.

From the beginning, nuclear power was seen as the panacea for electrical power from a much cheaper and faster than through fossil fuels like oil or coal , which are considered highly polluting energy. In fact, with one kilo of uranium (material used in nuclear fission) could produce as much energy as 1000 tons of coal.
should be noted, therefore, that energy comes from nuclear fusion reactions Commission (union of two atoms) and fission (splitting of a heavy atom into two lighter) in which release huge amounts of energy used to produce electricity. The fission process is the most currently used in nuclear power plants.

Image taken from http://www.elpais.com
However, it was from the decade of the 70 and 80 when awakened by cries of alarm about the dangers that could result in the radiation especially in case of accidents. The truth is that the risk of a serious accident at a nuclear plant it built is very low, but some of these accidents like Chernobyl occurred in 1986 in a Soviet central raised with a very poor safety measures, has In many countries the view Service has been revealed against the development of this energy. The tragic events that occurred in Japan in recent days have led to countries like Germany to concentrate about 60,000 people to demonstrate against nuclear energy and its harmful effects on the planet and its inhabitants.

This energy so controversial these days has a number of advantages and disadvantages . Among its virtues it would emphasize, first, that to be an alternative to fossil fuels like coal or oil would avoid the so-called global warming. This then improve the quality of air we breathe, which in turn would be good for our health.

However, one of their most serious drawbacks is the generation of nuclear waste and its difficult to manage because it takes many years to lose its radioactivity and dangerous.
This waste can be classified according to their activity, high activity (consisting of fuel elements cattle), medium activity (produced in the process of nuclear fission) and low activity (tools, clothing and other material used for the maintenance of power plant nuclear). In Spain the National Company for Radioactive Waste (ENRESA) responsible for the management of this waste, whether from nuclear or other radioactive facilities such as hospitals and research centers related to this field.

While it is economically profitable, not so much in terms of construction and commissioning of a nuclear plant in Spain considering that the life of a nuclear plant is 40 years.
also auque security systems are very advanced nuclear fission reactions generate a chain reaction that if the control systems an explosion would cause radioactive fail, the consequences for the planet and humanity could be dire.
few days ago the Council of Ministers of the Government of Spain approved the extension of the life of nuclear plants in the country, beyond the stipulated in the project life of 40 years .

The controversy revolves around this alternative energy as profitable and dangerous at the same time continue to grow with scandals and accidents such as occurred recently in Japan years ago in Chernobyl (USSR), whose effects on la Tierra y sus habitantes pueden ser especialmente perjudiciales.

For class:

nuclear energy is one of the key issues in all textbooks provided to students of junior high and that is to be included under the theme renewable energy. From Educambiente we propose the following tools to use in class and allow students to understand the depth and clarity in these matters that so concern nowadays humanity.

-clicking here you access a page that contains a clear, brief and pleasant about the effects of radioactivity.

"In this other link presents a brief overview of the radioactivity

-Visit this page to receive full information on nuclear energy as a whole.

-I also included this little manual about the nuclear nergy you can see clicking here.

Japan Nuclear Energy: As has created one of the biggest disasters in history

It is too difficult to know exactly all the damage that has been generated the tsunami in Japan, the country is far more who have suffered the impact toughness. Thus, from Educambiente we take a tour of how we got to this situation, making a series of explanations that show in detail the steps that have been followed until now.

Indian Ocean Tsunami. Source: Wikipedia
start with what has generated all this excitement, the tsunami. What is a tsunami? A tsunami is the Japanese word for tidal wave, coined in 2004 because of the disaster that occurred in the Indian Ocean (remember Indonesia, Thailand ...). So we proceed to the explanation of what a tsunami. In short it is an action that occurs at sea causes the displacement of an unusual amount of water leads to the creation of oversized waves and unimaginable power. Most tsunamis are caused by earthquakes at sea, earthquakes. The Japanese case is also the result of an earthquake in the sea with a moment magnitude of 8.9 Richter Scale (the scale used to measure this type of natural disasters).

8.9 To better understand what is best to go down in history and compare with other data that illustrate better the event. The earthquake that occurred recently in Chile and that was the death of 525 people and a figure of over 2 million homeless, was of a magnitude of 8.8. And also the current record is held by Chile, in 1960 at a location near Valdivia reached 9.5 Scale, with a figure of over 2,000 dead.

So as we explain an earthquake. Earthquakes are generated by the collision of tectonic plates (rigid plates that make up the lithosphere stone or earth surface) that cause the release of energy, and one of these releases may be in the form of earthquakes. This energy can be of such magnitude that may cause the removal of entire sites. Recent studies indicate that after everything that happened in Japan, the island has moved 4 meters to the east.

En The following image shows where the nuclear plants in Japan, where the epicenter of the earthquake:

Most of them are in coastal locations. Japan is very prone to natural disasters because of its location and has a total of 17 plants. In this catastrophe have damaged the closest to the earthquake: Onagawa , Tokai Daini and especially the two plants Fukushima (Daini and Daiichi) . If plants are not prepared for such contingencies can happen what happened in Chernobyl in 1986, the biggest nuclear disaster of all time.

The environmental consequences of Chernobyl were devastating. Disproportionate levels of radiation in the area that led to the evacuation of large clouds of radiation that came to France and even the English coast. Because radiation is followed numerous cases of cancer, birth defects ... and above all, was a very important club for the atmosphere as much fuel was sent to her, working on the already weakened membrane that surrounds the Earth. Here we show a graph where you can watch the international scale of nuclear accidents or events:

Following the chart, the Chernobyl accident was considered as maximum. At present it is still debating the level that is reaching the disaster in Japan. Estimates state that has reached level 6 with significant environmental damage, although more moderate claim that the situation is at level 4 of the scale, local accident consequences. It was thought that after what happened in Chernobyl was to learn from mistakes. This is an example of what not and to do something with this energy, to assess whether the pros outweigh the cons.

The subsequent picture shows the operation of the reactor:

Finally we want to show the video that follows, an animation showing children the problem that has been generated in Japan in relation to the nuclear plant.
